About Sentinela Verde
Sentinela Verde is an independent, open project that makes forest change in Romania visible to anyone, not just specialists. It brings satellite forest-loss data and public protected-area datasets together on one interactive map, so you can see where Romania's forests are changing.
Where the data comes from
Forest loss is measured from satellite imagery by Global Forest Watch, using the University of Maryland (Hansen) tree-cover-loss dataset, covering 2001 to 2025. Protected areas (the Natura 2000 network and Romania's strictly protected and virgin forests) come from the European Environment Agency and Romanian public sources.
What the map does and does not claim
The map shows where tree cover was lost, not why, and not whether any cutting was legal. Forest loss can result from legal harvesting, storms, disease, or fire, as well as illegal logging. Sentinela Verde deliberately makes no judgement about legality; it makes the change visible so people can ask better questions.
